The western slope of the Rockies receives a lot of rain and we were the beneficiaries as this stream presented itself. Our first hike, following the stream fed by Avalanche lake, was a warm-up, 4 miles round trip. It afforded opportunities to test boot and sock combinations, feel for hard spots in packs, sort us by pace and to learn more about our companions.
